Over a span of 77 years, the University of Eastern Philippines has metamorphosed from a municipal agricultural school to a full pledge university status.  It was first opened in 1918 as the Catarman Agricultural School and was renamed as the Catarman National Agricultural High School in 1951.  On June 14, 1957, the school was again converted into the Samar Institute of Technology.  In response to the call for increasing manpower needs to propel rural development, the SIT was finally converted on January 27, 1964 into the University of Eastern Philippines by virtue of Republic Act No. 4126.
